Long-term visa and Long-term residence permit for family purposes

What is it, and who is it for?

A Long-term visa for family purposes is designed for non-EU citizens who wish to reside in the Czech Republic with a family member. This visa is intended for stays exceeding 90 days and is ideal for family members of non-EU citizens who want to join their loved ones in the country.

A Long-term residence permit offers a more stable and long-term solution compared to a Long-term visa. It can be issued for a longer period and is available to family members such as spouses, children, or dependent relatives. If you plan to live in the Czech Republic with your family for an extended period and meet the necessary requirements, a Long-term residence permit may be a more suitable option.

Who qualifies for it? You may apply for a Long-term visa for family purposes if you are an immediate family member (such as a spouse, same-sex registered partner, or a dependent relative) of a foreign national who holds a residence permit in the Czech Republic and you wish to live together for more than 90 days. Other family members may also qualify for a visa, but their eligibility is subject to evaluation by the Ministry of the Interior.

You may apply for a Long-term residence permit if you are a family member of a non-EU citizen and wish to live with them in the Czech Republic for more than 1 year. Eligible family members, as defined by law, include:

  • spouses and same-sex registered partnerships

  • Children, stepchildren or adopted children under 18 years of age

  • financially or medically dependent children of full age

  • lone parent over 65 years of age – single, divorced or widowed.

  • lone parent (single, divorced or widowed) regardless of age who cannot take care of himself/herself for medical reasons

How long is the Long-term visa valid? The Long-term visa is generally valid for a maximum of 1 year and serves as a temporary solution for family purposes. After entering the country, you may apply for an extension or transition to another type of residence permit, depending on your circumstances.

How long is the Long-term residence permit valid? The Long-term residence permit is typically issued for the same duration as the residence permit of the family member with whom you plan to live in the Czech Republic. However, it is granted for a minimum of 1 year with the possibility of its renewal.
